The first meeting of an Old Comrades Association of The Royal Welch Fusiliers was held in October 1912. However it was not until the Great War that "The Royal Welch Fusiliers Comrades Association" was founded, and 1925 before a trust deed officially laying out the purposes of the association was registered in the "Central Office of the Supreme Court of Judicature". The Trust Deed was revised for the time in 1987.

Membership of the association is restricted to any individual of any rank who is serving, or has served,in the regiment or any of its Militia Service Special Reserve,Volunteer or Territorial Battalions or in any unit duly authorised and recognised by the Army Council as belonging to or forming of any part of the Regiment.

The main objects of the Association are :

(A) To form a bond for all those who are serving or have served with the Regiment, and to keep members of the Association in touch with the Regiment.

(B) To promote the well being of the Regiment as a whole, and the men and women serving in the Regiment.

(C) To foster esprit de Corps amongst past and present members of the Regiment.

(D) To provide financial assistance in deserving cases to past and present members of the Regiment, their widows and dependants who are in need.

Her Majesty The Queen is Patron of the Association and The Colonel of The Regiment is its president.

R.W.F Comrades Reunion Weekend

During the summer months, Wrexham is the venue for the annual R.W.F Comrades Reunion Weekend. This weekend brings together R.W.F Comrades, where they talk over the many exploits that each and every one of them encountered.

Usually the comrades start arriving at Hightown Barracks around 12.00 noon on the Friday before the weekend, and immediately get the highest treatment that any establishment can give.

They are officially booked in and shown to places like the mustering point in case of fire, cookhouse, Regimental Headquarters where they can find out the timetable for the weekend, this is also a chance to buy souvenirs including Flashes, Badges, mugs, hip flasks, paintings, etc.

The Friday night is left free and they can explore the many pubs in Wrexham, where they can relax and have a chat over old times.

Saturday Morning around 07.00 they are awoken with the sound of Reveille, played by a Bugler from the 3rd Battalion R.W.F, this brings back memories for the comrades, they love to hear it year after year, they then have a good old Army breakfast which includes eggs, bacon, sausage, tomato's, fried bread , not forgetting "Baked Beans", this all washed down with a good old cuppa T. (no bromide)

Around 10.00am The Comrades head for the Guildhall, where they have an official function with the Mayor of Wrexham, afterwards they have a photograph taken as shown above.

During the day there are Standard Bearer Competitions, shooting competitions, and the A.G.M (annual general meeting), where all comrades get together in a large hall and talk over the last year.

Around 6pm , the comrades head for the Llwyn Isaf, which is a large lawn outside the Guildhall, they then watch the Beating of the Retreat performed by the Goat, Pioneers and Drums of the Royal Welch Fusiliers, afterwards the night is their own to do as they wish.

Sunday Morning, the comrades get awoken the same, with the bugle, which can be a little bit annoying, especially if they have a hangover from the "night before", and again head for the cookhouse for more heavenly delights. The comrades are then transported to town where a memorial service takes place at the Cenotaph, followed by a march to St Giles Parish Church where they attend a Service, afterwards they march behind the Corps of Drums of the 3rd Battalion R.W.F , they marchpast the Mayor of Wrexham and VIP's, and then to a final destination. They are then Fallen out by the R.S.M (Regimental Sergeant Major),and then transported back to Hightown Barracks where final functions commence.

The Comrades then Depart Home after a very Successful Weekend, ready for the next......
